Rarely does a truck earn collective praise from the industry elites, so when it does happen, it’s for a good reason. That was the case with the all-new 2017 Ridgeline; completely redesigned from head to toe, Honda’s premier pickup is a breath of fresh air in a market that has been choking on its own staleness. And in being everything we’d hoped it’d be, the ’17 Honda Ridgeline has now been deemed the North American Truck of the Year.

Is the Ridgeline a Truck or a Car?

The Ridgeline’s platform is part-car, but its demeanor is all-truck—and don’t tell it otherwise.

On the outside is a full-fledged truck bed that extends 64 inches out and 60 inches to the sides to provide up to 33.9 cubic feet or cargo volume. With a curb weight that pushes over 4,000 pounds, its maximum towing capacity of 5000lbs (on AWD models) is simply remarkable, especially given what’s underneath its hood. A newcomer to Honda’s lineup, the Ridgeline’s 280-hp 3.5L V6 offers 262 lb.-ft. of torque, Hill Start Assist, and an Eco-Assist System that helps the truck achieve a combined 22 MPG.

What really powered the Ridgeline to become the NTOY is the bed’s car-like quality.

To maximize functional bed space better, Honda engineers opted to hide wheel wells with sturdy bed walls and a lifted bed liner. The result is a perfectly flat (basically) bed that can hold 4’ x 8’ plywood boards without having to rig them up on their side.

The Dual-Action Tailgate can swing down in traditional fashion to extend the bend length or to the left to offer easier access to the built-in trunk. With the 150W/400W Truck-Bed Outlet, you can even transform the bed into a mobile workshop. Bring those all-important tools with you on a job, and you’re sure to make it back home in time for the game.

“Back up—what’s this about a built-in trunk?” It’s true; the Ridgeline has adopted a car trunk to provide you with an additional 7.3 cubic feet of storage space. Just lift the latch at the end of the bed to access this hidden and lockable compartment. It can even act as your tailgating partner in crime thanks to its 82-quart storage capacity, drain plug, and dividers. What’s best is that you can clean it out with a quick spray of the hose.

Also new and completely unique to the Ridgeline is a Truck Bed Audio System that operates separately from the one inside the cab. Connect your phone to the bed’s Bluetooth and stream all your tunes when you’re working in the yard.

Those car-like qualities shine Inside the Ridgeline. An optional 8-inch touchscreen and center storage console are very handy, as is a rear seat that can seat three comfortably. An additional cargo area under the second row offers grab-and-go convenience. Safety features like Blind Spot Visibility, LaneWatch, and a Multi-Angle Rear View Camera also landed the Ridgeline on the IIHS’s “Top Safety Pick+” list—another rare feat for a pickup truck.
