Honda’s Hot Hatch: The All-New 2022 Civic Hatchback

By debuting its hot new 2022 Civic Hatchback with a global YouTube reveal powered by pop star H.E.R., Honda made no bones about who their target audience is: Young ‘uns.

Honda is hoping to attract these younger buyers looking for a versatile, affordable, and sporty set of wheels that offers a ton of high-tech goodies, lively performance, a chic modern look, and ample room for friends and gear. And now that the discontinued Fit has headed to that “Great Parking Lot in the Sky,” the Honda Civic Hatchback takes over as the automaker’s sole hatchback offering (not counting the hyper-sporty Civic Type R).

Let’s learn more about Honda’s hot new Civic Hatch.

Fresh Euro-Styled Exterior

Compared to previous models, the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback brings a cleaner, less angular, and more refined exterior into a sharper focus. Inspired by sleek Euro-spec coupes, the Civic sheds its numerous cutlines and creases in favor of a smoother, more aerodynamic, and less cluttered visual appearance. The new Civic Hatch also adds 1.4 inches to its wheelbase and a half-inch to its rear track, giving it a longer, lower, and wider look.

A walkaround of the new Civic Hatch’s exterior reveals a more coupe-like silhouette with a longer hood, and a sloping roofline with a large rear window tapering into slender, horizontal tail lights with a red LED high-mounted stoplight bar that stretches the length of the rear deck. Gone are the Civic’s “C-shaped” taillights and signature spoiler, giving it a sophisticated profile that’s more Acura and Audi-like.

Revamped Interior Emphasizes Sporty Simplicity

In keeping with the new Civic Hatchback’s clean and uncluttered exterior, Honda designers gave it an updated interior that emphasizes form and function. Honda calls this decluttered interior design philosophy “human-centered” because it focuses on simplicity, spaciousness, sportiness, and ergonomic efficiency.

“The Civic’s interior sings,” enthuses Martin Padgett, Editorial Director of TheCarConnection.com. “As a prelude to coming electric cars, Honda’s laid out a simple cabin with a thin strip of honeycomb trim that hides the air vents, which adjusts with joystick ease. Glossy black trim’s relegated to surfaces not normally touched, and the dials and window switches have metal tips and connect with satisfying clicks.”

Revamped 2022 Civic Hatchback Interior

The Civic Hatch’s larger exterior dimensions pay off with more interior room for drivers and passengers. Windshield pillars have been pushed back, the side mirrors have been repositioned onto the door, and the rear window is larger, resulting in an interior that’s airy and spacious with excellent outward visibility. Front passengers will also enjoy the Civic’s standard Body Stabilizing Seats which offer a new dimension of comfort and support.

Supreme Versatility

One of the benefits of owning a hatchback is its ability to transport both people and things in a variety of ways. Honda has maximized the Civic Hatch’s versatility by giving it multi-configurable, available 60/40 split rear seats that, when folded flat, offer a generous amount of cargo space.

Supreme Versatility

Thanks to an innovative, proprietary resin material, Honda’s engineers have lightened the rear liftback’s weight, allowing for thinner hinges and a wider opening that’s also lower to the ground for easier loading and unloading.

Technology Must-Haves

Further appealing to the youth-oriented market segment, the new 2022 Civic Hatchback comes loaded with an impressive array of standard and available infotainment and connectivity features.

Technology Must Haves

These high-tech “must-haves” include a crisp, responsive, and easy-to-use standard 7-inch Display Audio Touchscreen with available “Smart Shortcuts,” Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration*, both front and rear USB ports*, steering wheel-mounted controls, and Bluetooth® wireless connectivity.

If you want to take innovative technology to the next level, you can plus your ride with available wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a high-def 9.0-inch color touchscreen display, wireless Qi-compatible phone charging, and premium 12-speaker Bose Centerpoint® Audio System*. You can also equip your new Civic Hatchback with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™* that uses offline maps, so you never have to worry about losing your way in areas with limited cell phone coverage.

Spirited Performance + A 6-Speed Manual

Not only does the sporty new Civic Hatchback look the part, but it also backs up its sporty styling with two spirited powerplants that deliver lively performance for an exhilarating driving experience.

Civic Hatchback Spirited Performance

The Civic Hatchback LX and Sport models are powered by a peppy 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine delivering 158 horsepower at 6,500 rpm (SAE net) and 138-lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm (SAE net). It’s mated to Honda’s latest version of its advanced Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with Step-Shift programming that features user-selectable Normal, Eco, and Sport modes.

But if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush when commuting on I-75, heading to the University of Dayton, or popping down to Cincinnati for the weekend, then may we suggest the turbocharged performance of the Civic Hatchback EX-L or Sport Touring models. They’re powered by a more potent 1.5-liter turbocharged VTEC® four-cylinder engine that amps up the fun with 180 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (SAE net) and 177 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,700 to 4,500 rpm (SAE net).

Oh, and did we mention that you can equip your Civic Hatchback with a crisp-shifting six-speed manual transmission for the ultimate joy ride? Plus, Honda has also tweaked the Civic Hatch’s suspension, low-friction McPherson strut ball joints, optimized springs, and dampers, and new rear lower control arm bushings, and a new body structure that’s 19% more rigid.

Superlative Safety

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the new 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback for sale near Dayton, Ohio features Honda’s most advanced safety technology.

Honda has upgraded its industry-leading Honda Sensing® suite of advanced active safety features with a new standard Traffic Jam Assist function. The Sport Touring model also gets Low-Speed Braking Control as standard equipment. Also new for 2022, both Civic hatchback and sedan get Honda’s groundbreaking new front airbags that are designed to reduce the risk of traumatic brain and neck injuries.

Honda’s innovative Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock® is also available on Sport, EX, and Touring models. With your key fob in your pocket, it automatically locks the doors when you walk away from the vehicle. To open the doors, just grab the front door handles, which unlock automatically.
